Why We Built a "Pilgrimage Passport"
Turning a directory into a journey with milestones and themed collections
We recently shipped two features for CatholicGo that I'm genuinely excited about — not because they're flashy, but because they tap into something deeper about how people find meaning in their experiences.
The Problem
CatholicGo helps users discover and visit Catholic sites across the United States — churches, shrines, basilicas, and sacred spaces. But we noticed something: users would visit a site, mark it as visited, and then... that was it. The experience ended there.
We had built a directory. What we needed was a journey.
The Solution: Two Complementary Features
Pilgrim Progression
When users visit sites, they now progress through meaningful milestones — from "Seeker" to "Pilgrim" to "Wayfarer" and beyond. Each milestone comes with a custom badge displayed on their profile and next to any testimonials they leave.
The key insight: people are wired to accelerate toward visible goals. Psychologists call this the Goal Gradient Effect — the closer we get to a finish line, the harder we push. So we created clear milestones and made progress impossible to ignore.
And we named them intentionally. We didn't just slap numbers on visits — we chose titles that resonate with the pilgrimage tradition itself. "Witness" at 50 sites means something. "Elder" at 100 tells a story.
Themed Collections
Instead of an overwhelming list of 200+ sites, we curated meaningful groupings:
Go Deep — Sites with significant saint relics
Go to Mary — Marian apparition and devotion sites
Go Quiet — Contemplative monasteries and retreat centers
Go Wild — Remote and rugged sacred spaces
Each collection has its own visual identity and badge. Complete a collection, earn the badge, share your accomplishment.
Why This Works
Progress creates commitment. When people can see how far they've come, they're more likely to continue. We show users exactly where they are — not to pressure them, but to honor the ground they've already covered.
Choice creates ownership. With 11 different collections, users aren't following our path — they're choosing theirs. The journey becomes personal.
Milestones create stories. Nobody says "I visited 47 sites." But people do say "I completed the Marian collection" or "I reached Wayfarer status." We're giving users vocabulary to describe their accomplishments.
What This Means for Retention
These features give users reasons to return that feel intrinsic rather than manufactured:
"I'm 2 sites away from completing Go Deep."
"I just visited a monastery — let me log it and see how close I am to Wayfarer."
The goal isn't artificial urgency. It's surfacing the natural satisfaction that already exists in accomplishment — and making it visible.
The Lesson
The temptation in product work is to optimize for metrics directly. More notifications. More streaks. More FOMO.
But the best features don't demand engagement — they reward it. They meet users where they already are and amplify what they already want to do.
People visiting sacred sites don't need us to manufacture meaning. The meaning is already there. Our job is to reflect it back to them.
